It is still the middle of August and we have our first two teams reaching the 70 win mark over the weekend in baseball. With the playoff push beginning, we look at the wild card race. The NL Wild Card race is setting up to be an exciting finish to the season.

Right now in the National League alone there are 7 teams within single digit games back. The Washington Nationals being at the bottom of that list sitting 8 games back currently.

NL Central at WAR

Four of these teams are from the NL Central, including the Pittsburgh Pirates who have lost 7 games in a row and sit 5 games back from a NL wild card spot. The Cincinnati Reds are a half game better as far as standing go, sitting 4.5 games back. The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals are the other two NL Central teams fighting for position.

The Cubs being the hottest of all teams mentioned in this article riding a 4 game win streak and sitting 3 games back of a playoff spot. The Cardinals are 1.5 games back from a playoff spot, tied with the Giants of San Francisco.

NL Wild Card Teams Close to the Line

The Giants are 7-3 over the last ten games and are looking to make a late season push into the playoffs.

Then you have the New York Metropolitans who after having a hot run in June and July look to make one more push at the NL Wild Card. Their division foe Atlanta Braves are holding on to that last wild card spot with dear life. The Mets are 0.5 games back from Atlanta.

Teams in if Season Ended Today

The Braves are sitting right now in the last wild card spot barely, with every team listed above coming for them. Above the Braves are possibly two of the hottest teams in baseball holding onto the other two wild card spots.

Both teams from the NL West, the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks. Both teams have been on a tear since the trade deadline and are looking to make another post season push.

The Padres make a deep run in 2022, while the Diamondbacks made a run all the way to the World Series last season.

There still is a lot of baseball to be played, yet, for the teams listed above; every series MATTERS.
