There is about to be a lot of NFL news over the next few weeks, and this will begin it. Michael Thomas is getting released by the Saints.
New Orleans designated him as a post-June 1 cut, reports say.
Thomas signed a new contract last offseason that included $119 million in guaranteed bonuses if he remained on the team by March 15th. Due to that and most likely the injury history, this move is not very shocking.
The two-time Pro Bowler has played just 20 games since his breakout season in 2019. An ankle injury limited him to just seven games in 2020, and he then would miss all of 2021 after a setback. A toe injury ended his 2022 season prematurely, and the Saints placed him on IR last November due to a knee ailment. He then would only play 10 games in 2023.
Michael Thomas led the NFL in receptions in 2018 (125) and 2019 (149). His 1,725 receiving yards in 2019 also led the league.
The 31-year-old finished last season with 39 receptions, 448 yards, and one touchdown. There are a few teams in the market for a veteran receiver, so it will be interesting to see where Thomas ends up.
