The Miami Dolphins have sent defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick to the New York Jets in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round pick, sources told Adam Schefter. The pick going to Miami reportedly originally belonged to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Fitzpatrick, who is a five-time Pro Bowler, will signed a three-year, $40-million contract extension when he joins the the Jets, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told Schefter.
The Dolphins, who had originally drafted Fitzpatrick 11th overall in 2018, acquired the 29-year-old last season in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, making last season his his second stint with the team. Before returning to the Dolphins, he spent six seasons with the Steelers, earning two All-Pro nods in that span.
On top of moving Fitzpatrick, the Dolphins announced earlier this offseason, they also released quarterback Tua Tagovailoa at the start of the new league year. Miami is entering a new era after hiring Jon-Eric Sullivan as general manager and Jeff Hafley as head coach this offseason, so there was a lot of overhaul to the team.
For the Jets, adding Fitzpatrick should help a porous defensive unit that ranked 31st in points allowed per game (29.6) last season. That same Jets defense also managed to not get a single interception throughout the whole season last yearc.
