Some surprising news from Las Vegas.
The Raiders have placed wide receiver Michael Gallup on the retired list, the team announced Tuesday.
The 28 year old signed a one year contract with the Raiders this April. This news surprised a lot of the Raiders players and staff, even General Manager Tom Telesco.
Gallup spent his first six seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, who drafted him in the third round of the 2018 draft.
Gallup had a promising start to his career, achieving 1,000 yards in his second year in the league, before his production began to decline.
He sustained a torn ACL in 2021, but still signed a five-year, $62.5-million extension with the Cowboys during the 2022 offseason.
Dallas, however, released him this past March after he caught only 34 passes for a career-low 418 yards and two touchdowns.
Gallup recorded 266 catches, 3,744 yards, and 21 touchdown receptions in 86 NFL games.
He was projected to be a depth piece for a Raiders roster that features Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers.
What makes this move even crazier? The Cowboys chose to pay a young Gallup coming off of injury instead of Amari Cooper. It’s an interesting ‘what if’ to think about.
What if the Cowboys kept Cooper instead of Gallup. Would CeeDee Lamb, Amari Cooper, Jake Ferguson, and Brandin Cooks be enough? With that really good defense the Cowboys have had?
