The Los Angeles Chargers agreed to terms with free-agent tight end David Njoku, the team has announced this past Monday. Njoku reportedly visited the Chargers in early May and was among the top remaining free agents. He also visited the Baltimore Ravens in April.
Njoku will sign a one-year contract worth up to $8 million, sources told Ian Rapoport. Before this, the 29-year-old tight end had spent his entire nine-year career with the Cleveland Browns after being selected in the first round of the 2017 draft. He just finished up playing out a four-year, $56.75-million contract he signed with Cleveland in May 2022 before signing this new deal.
Njoku was limited to 12 games last year due to a knee injury, acquiring 33 receptions for 293 yards and four touchdowns. He also played in just 11 games the year prior due to multiple ailments. To go along with the injuries in 2025, Harold Fannin seemingly took over his snaps as Fannin continued to improve his play.
Njoku had his best season come in 2023, when he earned his only Pro Bowl nomination while totaling 83 catches on 123 targets for 882 yards and six touchdowns. Njoku has scored 34 touchdowns since entering the league. That would rank seventh among all active tight ends, according to TruMedia.
Njoku will join a Chargers tight ends room that has Oronde Gadsden and Charlie Kolar. Gadsden, whom Los Angeles selected in the fifth round of the 2025 draft, finished 11th among all tight ends in receiving yards as a rookie last season. Kolar looks to be more of the blocking tight end, so it will be interesting to see how Njoku fits in the offense.
