Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen announced Thursday that quarterback Anthony Richardson will not be participating in the remainder of the team’s offseason program practices, including the teams minicamp next week.
Richardson is expected to return at some point during training camp, but Steichen wouldn’t put a timetable on the recovery. The Colts don’t expect the injury to require surgery, but it will cause Richardson to miss extended time.
Steichen explained Richardson experienced pain in his throwing shoulder after an OTA practice last week. Further evaluation showed he reaggravated the AC joint injury that ended his rookie season early in 2023.
Richardson is still expected to compete for the Colts’ starting job with Daniel Jones, who signed a one-year deal with the Colts in March. With Richardson injured, Daniel Jones looks to be the starter as of this current moment.
Injuries have been a big issue for Richardson, as he’s only appeared in 15 games since being drafted fourth overall in 2023. The 23-year-old completed 50.6% of his passes for 2,391 yards and 11 touchdowns against 13 interceptions in those games.
This could be a huge year for Anthony Richardson. All signs point towards this season potentially being the breaking point. With Jim Irsay passing away, uncertainty is all over Indianapolis. Good or bad play could truly dictate what happens to the quarterback position for the Colts going into the future.
