While this is by no means a guarantee they will change the name, this news has been gaining more and more traction.

Name Change

Ever since the sale of the Commanders by Dan Snyder, Washington has looked to get its “brand back.” To put it nicely, there were a lot of issues during the Dan Snyder era. From terrible stadium issues to behind the scenes workplace horrors, the Commanders began to have a bad stench all around it.

With new ownership under Josh Harris, who also owns the New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia 76ers, they are looking to get as far away as possible from the Dan Syder era. One possibility is bringing back the old name of Washington.

Why the change?

During a huge wave of just about everything life could throw at the world in 2020, social injustice and racism was one of the bigger subjects of the times. This would lead to some teams changing their names, like the Cleveland Indians going to the Cleveland Guardians. Washington was no different, changing the name from Redskins, to Football Team, to now the Washington Commanders.

This is where it switches up, however. There are so many Native American coming out now saying now is the time for the Redskins to come back. There is a petition to change the name back to Washington Redskins, and this has now got up to 90,000+ signatures as of August 15th.

Time to bring back the Redskins?

For Many of these Native Americans, their biggest reason for this is you cannot erase history. In a letter sent to the ownership and head coach of the team, there is a quote from it that says: “You simply cannot erase history and target the Native American community by eradicating the name ‘Redskins’ while being an organization that fosters other Constitutional rights, including players who don’t honor the American flag and kneel during our National Anthem,” the letter read in part.

The Native American Guardian Association (NAGA) has encouraged fans to sign the petition, which is “designed to promote our history, put an end to cancel culture, and #ReclaimTheName ‘Redskins.’” Even when it comes to the fan base, there is no erasing the history. So many fans of the team that still to this day continue to rep the brand of the old Washington Redskins name and logo. With more and more noise coming from the Native American community to bring it back, we could see this change in the next few years.
