When it comes to the NFL this week 1, it was truly a beautiful sight to have and view. Every week, I will give you three of my biggest takeaways from the week. Here are three big storylines/ intriguing thoughts I am watching for heading into next week and the rest of the season.
1. Jets Deja Vu
This injury to Aaron Rodgers is no question an issue. There is still no confirmation (as of 9-12 at 9:30am) if it is a torn achilles, but all signs point to that. If it is the case, the Jets will find themselves in the same situation as last year basically. Zach Wilson will be the starter for the foreseen future.
Last night was truly a sad moment for Jets fans. This is the 3rd or 4th time in Jets history they have lost a starting quarterback in week one for the season. The Jets could sign a veteran QB at any moment, but they will not be able to replace Rodgers. With a hard section of the Jets tough schedule upcoming, it will be interesting to see how the Jets offense looks. I do think the Jets offense will be better than last year, but I gave no clue how much better now.
This whole season is different for the Jets now. Jets fans again have to deal with pain, and this time it only took four offensive plays.
2. Anthony Richardson will be a guy
This was a good game to watch. When it came to Colts vs Jaguars, it truly was awesome to watch Anthony Richardson. While he did have a few rookie moments, he showed off some true potential in spots and flashed why he was the number 4 overall pick. This is the first time in a long time I was excited in a losing effort. While it may still take some time, Anthony Richardson showed just how much talent he has.
My biggest fear for him is protecting himself. He took a few big shots Sunday and will hopefully learn to take a few less. He did also have a poor read on an interception, but it is a part of the growing pains. For his first real NFL action, I loved what I saw from Richardson. There will for sure be many more highs and lows this season, but the end product will be worth it. I’m all in on Richardson, and I think he could even win Rookie of the Year. The Colts just may be a fun team to watch again.
3. Who had a better week 1? Cowboys? 49ers? Dolphins?
Between these three teams, I think these three had the best week. The NFC teams won in huge blowouts, while the Dolphins won a close shootout against the Chargers. For the Dolphins, Tua Tagovailoa looked really good. Tyreek Hill had 215 yards and 2 TDs. The Cowboys defense and special teams destroyed the Giants, and that game was not close at all. Brock Purdy and the 49ers looked dominant against the Steelers in week 1, who a lot of people are high on.
These three teams had truly the best games of the weekend. All three of these teams put strong feet forward. I would not be shocked if we are talking about these three teams in a few weeks as title contenders. I truly look forward to keeping a close eye on these teams. What i’m looking for from each team is
- Can Tua stay healthy?
- Can Dak Prescott and the Cowboy’s O reinforce the defense and make plays when it matters?
- Can the 49ers as a team stay healthy?
IF any of these things happen, the Cowboys, Dolphins, or 49ers could see themselves atop the league.
