The Seattle Seahawks and Pro Bowl safety Julian Love have agreed on a three-year extension worth up to $36 million, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
They also signed Leonard Williams on a three-year, $64.5 million deal with $43.85 million guaranteed.
Love, who joined Seattle on a two year deal in 2023, had one year left on his original contract with an eight million dollar cap hit for 2024.
Love’s first season with the Seahawks was a success, as he earned the first Pro Bowl selection of his career. Love recorded 123 tackles while setting career highs with 10 pass breakups, four interceptions, and two forced fumbles in 17 games. He allowed an 82.2 passer rating in 69 targets while in coverage.
Love played his first four NFL seasons for the New York Giants, who drafted him in the fourth round in 2019.
As for Leonard, the former Pro Bowler was acquired in a midseason trade with, funny enough, the New York Giants. This caused Seattle to send a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick the other way.
Williams played really good down the stretch, recording four sacks and nine tackles for a loss in 10 games with the Seahawks.
The sixth overall pick in the 2015 draft, Williams began his career with the New York Jets before moving to the Giants, and then now the Seahawks. His best year came in 2020 when he recorded 11.5 sacks as a member of the Giants.
Being key defensive starters for Seattle last season, Love and Williams projects to be main contributors to the team’s promising secondary and defensive line under first-year head coach Mike Macdonald in 2024.
The biggest issue with Seattle in the Pete Carroll era was defense. Other than the Legion of Boom years, the defense has always been inconsistent in Seattle. With Macdonald taking over, it will be interesting to see how much this defense takes a step forward. The Seahawks look to contenders for the playoffs, and the defense improving could help them out.
