The Seattle Seahawks and star cornerback Devon Witherspoon have agreed to a four-year, $132-million contract extension, sources told Adam Schefter.
Witherspoon’s new deal will include $101 million guaranteed while also making him the highest-paid cornerback in league history, Schefter adds.
Witherspoon will earn an average of $33 million per season, topping Denzel Ward’s $31.1 million average per year salary, according to Over the Cap.
Witherspoon has managed to make the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons with the Seahawks. He was also a beyond major important piece in a defensive unit that won Super Bowl LX last season.
The 6-foot, 185-pound defensive back has recorded 32 passes defensed, 16 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and two interceptions over 43 games in his career so far.
Witherspoon, who had two years remaining on his rookie deal, is expected to lead a defensive back group that also features Nick Emmanwori and could also feature Terrion Arnold. Arnold is reportedly set to sign with the Seahawks despite facing eight felony charges. That signing is currently being held up by the NFL commissioners exempt list, so the Seahawks have signed Trevon Diggs in the meantime.
Seattle have now fulfilled their intentions to reward their 2023 draft picks. The Seahawks made reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year Jaxon Smith-Njigba the league’s highest-paid receiver in March. Nearly six months later, they will now reward Witherspoon with a lucrative extension.
