The Carolina Panthers and former Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller agreed to a one-year contract, a source told Adam Schefter. Waller came out of retirement to catch 24 passes for 283 yards and six touchdowns in nine games with the Miami Dolphins last season.
Waller produced back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2019-20 during his heyday with the Las Vegas (then Oakland) Raiders.
Waller, who will turn 34 in September, joins a Panthers tight end room that features Ja’Tavion Sanders and Tommy Tremble. Carolina hasn’t had a tight end surpass 400 receiving yards since Greg Olsen’s final year with the club in 2019. So while Waller might not be the main target, he should be a good combo to put out there with Sanders or Tremble. On top of that, it should be a pretty decent target for Bryce Young in the red zone.
