Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord entered the transfer portal Monday.

The Buckeyes named McCord their starter a week before the season opener against Indiana. However, Devin Brown sporadically saw time at quarterback in the first five games before getting hurt against Penn State.

Kyle McCord helped lead the Buckeyes to an 11-1 record. In 12 starts, he threw for 3,170 yards with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Head coach Ryan Day wouldn’t commit to starting McCord in the Cotton Bowl against Missouri on Dec. 29.

“When you come up short, the bottom line is you got to look at everything, because you didn’t get it done, and that’s the thing that is just sobering here,” Day said Sunday, according to ESPN.

Day recruited McCord to Ohio State when the signal-caller was the No. 31-ranked prospect on the ESPN 300 in 2021. He sat behind now-Houston Texans starting quarterback CJ Stroud for his first two years.

Ohio State fell short of making the College Football Playoff after losing 30-24 to Michigan on Nov. 25. McCord threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns in the game but also had two interceptions that were crucial to the overall outcome.

The Buckeyes’ passing offense took a hit this season compared to past seasons. It averaged 275.7 yards through the air per game, compared to a 339.6 combined mark per contest during Stroud’s two-year tenure as the starter.
