I am so juiced for the NFL action this week in the NFL. After Thursday I am 1-1. Here are my plays for NFL Week 1.
Check out the latest episodes of the JCPod and Captain By A Hook for my full breakdowns. All odds are from Fanduel, DraftKings, and BetMGM.
Packers moneyline (I got +100)
I will not be super surprised if the Bears win, but I was shocked to see them favored. The Bears have not beat the Packers since 2018. I know Aaron Rodgers is gone, but I like how the defense looks. I could see this defense being a top 5 if they play to their potential. When it comes to this week one matchup, I will ride the Packers defense and run game in this game vs the Bears. I am curious and intrigued to see how the passing game goes for the Bears and Justin Fields though.
Seahawks -4.5
The news of Cooper Kupp heading to the IR has me liking this game more. The Rams are one of the three youngest teams in the NFL this season, and especially so on defense. The Seahawks offense looks to go even farther than they did last year in year two with some new weapons. They also upgraded the defense in a few key spots from last year as well. The Rams project to not be too good this year, but they did okay the Seahawks very good last year in both games. That being said, I am going to be riding Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks.
Vikings -6
The Buccaneers are supposed to be one of the teams in play for the first pick this year. Their defense will be solid, but there is no true answer to how the offense will look. The Vikings are coming in off a very strong season , and look to build off the success of last year. I’m excited to watch roomie Jordan Addison and see what role he plays in the Vikings offense. While the defense for the Vikings scare me, I think the Bucs offense shouldn’t be one that can expose them too badly. The Vikings had a strong opening game last year, and I look to see them doing it again. I’m going to take the Vikings spread.
Titans+3
I do think the Saints could win the game in Derek Carr’s debut, and I may even have picked them in my pick’em series. However, something about Mike Vrabel and the Titans getting three points just feels right to me. Vrabel coached teams always play tough and hard nosed. They also get the boost of adding Deandre Hopkins to their offense. I am going to take Vrabel and the 3 points in this game.
Colts +4.5
I’ll admit this is a bit of a homer pick, but I do have my reasons. The Jaguars have not won in Indianapolis since 2017. I also believe the Colts did not show their potential fully in the preseason with Shane Steichen and Anthony Richardson. While it could be a high scoring battle or a 20-21 sweat fest, I do like the Colts to be able to keep it close. I will also be on the moneyline for the Colts, but I am only giving out the points. Give me the Colts to cover at home, with Pat McAfee hitting the anvil to start the game.
Eagles -4
Tom Brady is coming back to New England to be honored in this game for the Patriots. For the Eagles , I think this is a great time to play the patriots. The Patriots under Bill Belichick get better as the year goes on, so the earlier the better. I like the Eagles to be able to handle business in this game and be able to cover -4 versus Mac Jones and the Pats in Week One.
Jets moneyline
For Monday night on 9/11 in Week One, I’m going to ride the hype train. The Bills did not play too well in the final playoff game last year, and the roster is still rather the same. Also not having Von Miller for a few more weeks will hurt, even with a super deep pash rush. I like the way the Jets defense looks this year, and I’m very excited for the Aaron Rodgers to Garret Wilson connection. I like the first matchup of this division game to go to the Jets. When it comes to this game, I see the Jets starting off the year strong before they begin their tough schedule ahead.
