While not a shocker, it is finally official.
Coach Dan Quinn announced Monday that Jayden Daniels will open the regular season as Washington’s starting quarterback, The Washington Post reports.
Daniels has effectively been in place as the Commanders’ starting QB throughout training camp, with Marcus Mariota working as his backup. Due to this, the No. 2 overall pick is officially slated to open Week 1 under center doesn’t come as a surprise.
In two preseason appearances so far, Jayden Daniels has been impressive. He played really well in Saturday night’s loss to the Dolphins. Daniels started the Commanders’ first two drives against Miami, completing 10 of 12 passes for 78 yards, while rushing twice for 13 yards.
Even if Daniels takes some time to fully adapt to the competition level of the NFL, his rushing capabilities will immediately thrust him onto the fantasy radar as an opening-day starter Week 1 versus the Buccaneers.
Along with that, the mobility should help Daniels stay alive in the backfield. The Commanders let up 65 sacks last season. The offensive line will need to do a lot better to help Daniel’s have time and be able to develop.
