Don’t look now, the Georgetown Hoyas are 12-2 to start the season and 3-0 in Big East play. The last 5 game stretch being impressive to say the least. Beating Syracuse, Creighton, Seton Hall, Coppin State, and Xavier.
As far as quad wins goes, Georgetown is 01 in quad 1, yet, 11-1 vs all other quads. Including 2-0 against quad 2. The only two losses thus far this season for the Hoyas are against Notre Dame and West Virginia.
Ed Cooley has this team rocking and rolling for the first time in almost a decade in just his second season at the realm. I can say personally I am stunned at how fast this turn around has happened.
When a team is losing constantly and at the bottom of the conference year in and year out, recruiting can be difficult. Georgetown is historically a powerhouse in college basketball and I am happy to see it getting back to that status.
Now the season is only halfway through and the toughest part lies ahead for this Hoya team, Big East Play. At of now Georgetown is only projected to win 5 more games this season. Odds I am confident they will surpass.
Georgetown’s next three games are against powerhouses Marquette, UConn, and St. John’s. All of which are in the conversation the be the best Big East team this season.
However, Ed Cooley has been in this conference for a long time. Coaching Providence for 13 seasons, he had that program in that conversation of top dog in the Big East. Looking to put Georgetown there will be a challenge and might take some more time. Yet, as of now, they are one of three teams who are undefeated in conference play.
An old saying in basketball is that “defense travels”. Meaning no matter if shots are falling or not you can always bring energy on defense.
That is exactly how Georgetown is getting the job done, on defense. Ranked in the top 60 in the nation in defensive efficiency (57), holding opponents to 0.95 points per possession.
Georgetown also does not foul often on the defensive end. Ranked in the top 30 (27) in both opponent free throw attempts per possession and in the top 25 (23) in 2 point field goal shooting % against. Holding opponents to 43% shooting inside the arc.
Defense wins games, and Georgetown is winning games by playing elite defense. As long as they keep this up, they will be in any and every game they play this season.
Could Ed Cooley get Georgetown back in the NCAA Tournament this season? As of now the possibility is there, something the Hoyas have not been able to say for a long time now.
