The Philadelphia Eagles are signing running back Saquon Barkley to a two-year, $41.2-million contract extension, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and the Pat Mcafee Show earlier this week.
Barkley becomes the NFL’s first running back to earn over $20 million per season. The deal includes $36 million fully guaranteed at signing, with incentives offering him more.
Howie Roseman has had a track record of signing guys a year early, and this seems like a really smart move. Based on what Barkley did last season, he will be a very valuable piece to trying to go back to back.
Barkleys new deal comes less than a year after he signed with the Eagles as a free agent. He’d spent the previous six seasons with the New York Giants.
Barkley will be getting a well-deserved raise after leading the league with 2,005 rushing yards while adding 13 touchdowns. He also hauled in 33 catches for 278 yards and three more touchdowns en route to being named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year.
Saquon gained 499 rushing yards and five TDs in four playoff games, including a 205-yard, two-score effort in a divisional-round win against the Los Angeles Rams. Barkley’s production was a massive part of the Eagles’ postseason run, which ended in a Super Bowl LIX victory.
Barkley had two years remaining on the three-year, $37.75-million deal he signed with Philadelphia in March 2024. His new $20-million annual average surpasses Christian McCaffrey’s yearly salary of $19 million.
