On Friday, the Washington Commanders announced that Sam Howell will be their starting quarterback. Howell was able to beat out Jake Fromm and veteran Jacoby Brissett to earn the role.
Commanders Head coach Ron Rivera came out and said he is “very confident and comfortable” with Howell taking over as QB one. Coach Rivera also said it was “Sam’s spot to lose from my perspective.”
Howell acknowledged the chance to show what he has got, saying “It means a lot of course to have this opportunity in front of me. All my work is ahead of me, this is only the beginning.”
Howell made one start in 2022 after being drafted in the fifth round that year. The 23 year old’s only start was that game against the Dallas Cowboys Week 18.
Eric Bieniemy is the new offensive coordinator for the Commanders. Bieneimy came over after winning a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Commanders finished 24th in points last year while also being 20th in yards. This new quarterback-offensive coordinator combo looks to take this Commanders offense to new heights.
