Trevor Lawrence now has his status for next week up in the air.
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence will undergo further evaluation for an AC Joint injury to his throwing shoulder sustained in Sunday’s 30-12 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, head coach Doug Pederson said.
Lawrence left the contest early in the fourth quarter with the Jaguars down 30-6 and was ruled out minutes later. C.J. Beathard entered the game at quarterback for Jacksonville.
The quarterback was injured on a fourth-down scramble and said postgame that he immediately knew he was hurt.
“When I landed, I knew … something was off,” he said.
The Jaguars quarterback completed 17 of 29 pass attempts for 211 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions before leaving versus Tampa Bay. Beathard went 11-for-15 with 94 yards and one TD pass in his relief appearance.
Lawrence has battled multiple injuries this season. He played through a knee injury that affected his mobility in the first half of the campaign. The former No. 1 pick also sustained a high ankle sprain on Dec. 5 but hasn’t missed any games. His status for the Bucs matchup was uncertain due to a concussion, but he cleared the protocol on Saturday.
Pederson added that it’s too early to determine if Lawrence will be able to play in Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers.
With Lawrence having his status in question, Jacksonville signed veteran quarterback Matt Barkley off the New York Giants’ practice squad.
The Jaguars are in a tight battle for the AFC South with the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts. All three teams sit at 8-7, but Jacksonville tops the division thanks to a tiebreaker advantage.
Lawrence entered Sunday with a 65.9% completion rate to go along with 3,525 yards and 18 touchdowns against 10 interceptions in 2023. He’s posted a 90.5 passer rating, down from 95.2 in 2022.
Lawrence has yet to miss a start due to injury since entering the NFL in 2021.
