Big East Basketball is looking like the best conference in college basketball early on.

I know it is way to early to know who is the best conference in basketball so far. Or is it? We have not only seen a number of Big East schools dominate early season tournaments, we have seen them play some of the best basketball cohesively.

This conference is not just top heavy either, going all the way down the list, there are quality schools. Only one of which has a losing record so far, DePaul.

While most conferences have 2 or 3 teams in the mix, this conference has 4 or 5. The Big East is the new Big 10, and might be better head to toe at this point.

Big East Basketball is the Best

In the top 25 currently 4 Big East teams sit, with two of them being in the top 5. At number 3 is Marquette who just put the world on notice in Maui after beating the number 1 team at the time Kansas, and almost stealing a game against Purdue, number 2 at the time.

Then at number 4 nationally is UConn, who just set a record for most consecutive non-conference double digit wins with 24 dating back to last season, and going through the Championship run.

Number 15 is Creighton, who could be the best team in the Big East when March comes. Then at 18 is Villanova who just showed that they can play with and beat anybody in the country in their impressive run last week to win the Battle for Atlantis.

I have yet to even mention Providence, who under new coach Kim English looks legit this season. Currently sitting at 5-1 and every game feels like they show up to take prisoners.

Behind them are a number of two loss schools who in their own right should be respected; Butler at 5-2 and then Georgetown, St. John’s, and Seton Hall sit at 4-2.

Big East Regular Season Gauntlet

Every year the world gets riled up about Big East basketball, and then the conference schedule begins and all the hype goes away.

Mostly that is because on any given night when these teams play each other, the result is up in the air.

Last season we watched as all of the top dogs hit a rough patch, seemingly taking turns at the top. UConn, Creighton, and Marquette went on a 5 game or longer losing streak before gaining consciousness on the ropes and being ready to fight again.

The biggest thing against this conference is the NCAA Tournament success, it always plagues little conference’s. For example the MountWest and the Big East are always rumored “teams to fade round 1”.

Last season we might have watched that curse get lifted, as UConn and San Diego State met for the championship, representing the little guys.

College basketball is back and this is what it is all about. Big East Basketball is for real, and it might be the best conference in the sport.
