Rick Pitino might be one of the most recognizable names when it comes to college basketball. He has coached at some illustrious colleges and even in the NBA for a stint.

He started his tenure at St. John’s last night and had the Red Storm clicking on all cylinders. St. John’s outlasted Stony Brook 90-74.

There were two players for the Red Storm that produced a double-double and another who came close. Rick Pitino was impressed, yet it true coaching fashion aimed his attention to a game against Michigan scheduled for next Monday when asked about the game just played.

Chris Ledlum and Joel Soriano both recorded a double-double. Ledlum finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds, Soriano scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Danis Jenkins flirted with a triple double coming just short in rebounds and assist. He ended the night with 17 points, 8 assist, and 7 rebounds in 29 minutes.

St. John’s out rebounded and assisted Stony Brook by significant margins. However the most impressive thing on display was the shooting from the Red Storm.

St. John’s shot the ball over a 50% cliff from the floor shooting 34 for 66. To go a step deeper, or a step back on the court, they shot 11 for 22 from behind the arc to finish with 50% shooting from 3. Unheard of.

As excited as the fans were in St. John’s when they hired Rick Pitino, they got me just a little happier after seeing their first performance.
