The Carolina Panthers are signing free-agent running back Rico Dowdle to a one year-deal, the team announced.
Dowdle agreed to terms on a contract worth up to $6.25 million, accordingi to Ian Rapoport.
Dowdle rushed for 1,079 yards, two touchdowns, and a career-best 4.6 yards per carry with the Dallas Cowboys last season. He also recorded 39 receptions for 249 yards and three scores.
The 26-year-old spent five seasons with the Cowboys but missed the 2021 regular season after sustaining a hip injury during a preseason game.
The Cowboys appeared to have moved on from Dowdle after signing Javonte Williams earlier in free agency, then later signing Miles Sanders.
The former South Carolina product is expected to provide depth behind starting running back Chuba Hubbard. Carolina signed Hubbard to a four-year, $33.2-million extension amid a career-best 1,195 yards and 10 TDs last season. The Panthers released Miles Sanders after two seasons. Jonathon Brooks, a 2024 second-round draft pick, is expected to miss time next season after sadly tearing his ACL a second time in 14 months in 2024.
