The Thursday night game between New Mexico and St. Mary’s was maybe the game I was most excited to see all week until this Friday slate of course.

No. 23 St. Mary’s for the first time in a long time come into the season not only ranked, also rumored to have a true shot at winning the WCC Conference.

New Mexico is a program with a great coach and amazing core who we have watched grew up together. Feels like an old school 90’s team, you or at least I cannot help but root for.

This matchup felt more like a first four in, last four out game before the tournament. Yet the mystery of what these teams truly are still in the balance and this was their second game. A chance for us all to see what these programs have.

St. Mary’s Got off to a Fast Start

St. Mary’s got things going early and took a 15 point lead into halftime. New Mexico struggled shooting, especially arguably their best scorer had an off night.

Add the fact that St. Mary’s out shot New Mexico at the free throw line 25 to 15, doubling the makes 16 to 8.

The Lobo’s played a good second half, yet the deed was already done. The deficit was unsurmountable.

The Gaels of St. Mary’s won 72-58 behind an amazing performance from Aidan Mahaney. Mahaney scored 25 points, making 5 three pointers in the process.

Both of these teams will be, or should be, in the tournament come March. We will see a lot of these kids this season.
