Marquette Basketball stuns Illinois in Chapaign.

Marquette went into Champaign, Illinois and took on the fighting Illini. This game was a tough fought game wire to wire, feeling like each timeout was a bell stopping the action in a 15 round championship bout.
The game was close all the way through with no team getting a lead larger than 8. Tyler Kolek stood out for the Golden Eagles as he personally made sure Marquette would stay in the game on a few occasions.
It felt like every time Illinois would get the momentum and the crowd would get rolling and screaming, little Tyler Kolek would go on a 6-0 run. Either scoring or assisting on every basket.
Marquette wins 71-64.
Illinois Shooting Woes
Hats off to Marquette’s defense, holding the Illini to 35% shooting from the floor. There were stretches when Illinois just flat out went cold, settled for a few too many three’s in the second half.
Over 50% of the shot selection from Illinois was from behind the arc. Shooting 33 threes out of their 60 field goals in the game, and only making 11, 33%.
Add in the turnover differential, Illinois’ 15 to Marquette’s 8, and the final score makes some sense, 71-64.
Marquette Basketball led by Kolek
Illinois’ Terrence Shannon Jr scored 21 points. Marcus Domask scored 18 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Luke Goode added in 13 and 4.
Oso Ighodaro scored 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds for Marquette and Kameron Jones scored a beautiful 15 points to go along with his 5 rebounds.
However the star of the show for either team was Marquette’s point guard Tyler Kolek, the lefty. Kolek and Jones were initiating the offense and making plays for themselves or teammates.
Kolek finished the night with 24 points 4 assist and 6 rebounds to led Marquette to the win in Champaign.
