Villanova basketball was off to a bad start this season, 3-4 record after a loss against Maryland on November 24th, 2024. Head coach Kyle Neptune’s seat was getting hotter by the day. Then something special happened. Villanova won 5 straight including a huge win against at the time No. 14 Cincinnati.
Then Big East conference play started and Villanova wasn’t expected to do much. After a close win against Seton Hall at home, the Wildcats would lose to Creighton on the road.
Since that 1-1 start to conference play, Villanova and Eric Dixon has been on an absolute tear. Beating Butler, DePaul, and then last night beating the back to back national champion UConn by the hair on their chin.
The heart from this entire group has been on display during this now 8-1 stretch dating back to that Maryland loss. Yet, one player stands out amongst all.
That player is Eric Dixon, who has strung together 25+ points in the last three games and is averaging 25.7 points per game.
The entire team has rallied behind Dixon’s play and Neptune’s coaching. Leading Villanova to a 4-1 conference record, tied for second along the likes of St. John’s and UConn.
Alex Karaban of UConn had a chance to tie the game with mere seconds on the clock as he lined up to shoot free throws. He missed one and gave the win to Villanova.
We are yet to know what kind of turning point that will be for both of these teams. Yet, one thing is for certain, that moment embodies both program’s seasons thus far.
Villanova getting the breaks they need as UConn seems to be coming up short when they need it most.
