Washington Commanders controlling owner Josh Harris is adamant about keeping Washington’s new name and branding.
“In this building, the name ‘Commanders’ means something. … The name is growing in meaning,” Harris told reporters two weeks ago, including ESPN.
“It’s now being embraced by our team, by our culture, by our coaching staff. We’re going with that,” he added, per John Keim of ESPN.
The team changed its name to the Washington Football Team in 2020 as a place holder before changing that name to the Commanders in 2022. The potential for another rebrand has been talked about and floated around since the Harris-led group acquired the team in 2023.
The process to change the name to the Commanders cost the franchise an estimated eight figures in research and rebranding, a source told CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones in 2023.
A lot of fans have asked to bring the old Redskins name, or at least move on from Commanders. Looks like Commanders will be the name for the foreseeable future.
