Week 1 has one more game to go, but boy was it a super fun and wild weekend. Here are my key points and reactions I took away from the weekend.
Colorado shines bright
TCU-Colorado might have been the game of the day Saturday. This offensive explosion saw both sides going back and forth the whole game. Shedeur Sanders had a Heisman worthy game, throwing for 510 yards and 4 touchdowns. Travis Hunter truly is special. He played over 100 snaps between both sides of the ball, and made big play after big play. Dylan Edwards also had an amazing game for a true freshman, scoring 4 total touchdowns and having 135 yards receiving.
Colorado put a lot of people on notice with this game. They for sure had some mistakes and will need to work on both sides of the lines. However, Deion Sanders’ team showed that they will be a force to reckon with this season. I personally cannot wait for Colorado vs USC.
TCUs defense might be an issue for them this season. We will have to see more, but this first game was a scare.
Texas State shocks Baylor
27.5 point dogs, and they won 42-31. Texas State pulled off an all time shocker, and this was a fun ride for those fans who rode along. The big story going on for Baylor will be the defense. The defense gave up a lot, and that was to Texas State. Conference play and tougher opponents could become a problem if Baylor can’t figure this out.
Purdue has a ways to go
The first game under new head coach Ryan Walters did not go as planned. The defense came out flat from the beginning, and the offense decided to join in after half. It took a month for the Illinois defense to settle in under Walters when he first joined the staff. While Purdue still may be a player for the B10 west this season, this first game showed they have a lot of work to do. Shoutout to Fresno State for coming in as 3.5 point dogs and handling business.
Ohio State’s offense may be an issue
While it was a 23-3 victory, this game was probably concerning for Buckeye fans. The quarterback battle may have been because Ohio State does not know who they like. The offense in this game just seemed to underperform from what everyone expected them to do. While a win is still a win, this could be concerning down the road. It is way too early to overreact, but this is something to keep an eye on. Indiana’s defense did a good job on the day as well, making a few huge big plays.
UNC wins battle of Carolinas
UNCs defense played a lot better than I expected, and looked very improved from last year. Nine sacks already in one game is a great start, especially when you only had 17 all of last year. Drake Maye also made a lot of good plays, and he looked strong other than two interceptions.. UNC will look to maybe be the third team to be a contender in the ACC after this big Week 1 win. Spencer Rattler and South Carolina will look to bounce back next week from a rough outing this week.
Illinois hangs on to win
Toledo made it tough, but a game winning field goal from Illinois would be the clincher. This game was scary for Illinois fans, as they did not play very well at all. A win is a win like I said before, but Illinois will have some work to do. I gave them out originally as a team to maybe win the B10 west. I have since changed my mind, and I am curious to see if this team will show improvement next week.
Wyoming storms back to win in 2OT
After going up 17-0 in the first quarter, Texas Tech just seemed to stop being effective. They got outscored 20-3 the remainder of the game, then lost in overtime. This was a big win by Wyoming, and a heartbreaking loss for Tech. Being 17 point favorites, blowing the early lead is a bad sign for this team. They have Oregon next week and that could be an issue.
FSU destroys LSU
LSU from the jump looked a bit rough. They had some big plays and huge moments, but they had way too many mistakes. Between missed tackles and leaving FSU wide receivers wide open, LSU had a long night. FSU will look to be really good this year, and this game showed some of the potential they got. I am super excited to see how this team does the rest of the season.
Other Scores I had an eye on
- Minnesota kicks game winning 45+ yard field goal to win 13-10 against Nebraska week 1
- UCF destroys Kent State 56-6
- Miami blows out Miami (OH) 38-3
- Michigan State wins 31-7 over Central Michigan
- Louisville storms back against Georgia Tech to win 39-34
- Stanford beats out Hawaii 37-24
- Auburn Blows out Umass 59-14
- Washington wins 56-19 vs Boise State
- Cal beats North Texas 58-21
- Penn State wins 38-15 over West Virginia
- Tulane wins 37-17 over South Alabama
- Rutgers wins 24-7 over Northwestern
- Oregon State blows out San Jose State 42-17
- Alabama manhandles Middle Tennessee 56-7
My Betting weekend
Came into the weekend 3-2, and I finished with a record of 5-9 on the week. I am now 8-11 on the year and am happy with how it went so far after week 1. I had some wrong takes about some teams, but found some other things I will like moving into next week. My favorite bet of the week was Colorado +8.5 vs Nebraska for week 2. That line has since moved to -2.5 for Colorado at some books. I also live bet Colorado +630 moneyline against TCU for a huge win.
We went 0-1 on the first Nasty Boy Parnell Play of the weekend. I cannot wait for week two of college, and week 1 of NFL action.
