Niko Medved, the head coach of Colorado State Basketball is this week’s coaching spotlight. This is his journey to having the Rams off to a 7-0 start to this season.

An assistant coach from 1997-2012, and a head coach since 2013. Niko Medved has been highly respected and left his mark in every program he has touched. That shows in the fact that two programs he assisted at later called him back to be the head man in charge, Furman and Colorado State.

Niko Medved, Coaching Spotlight.

From 1996 to 2006 Niko Medved was an assistant at Furman. In 2013 after a few other stints as an assistant, Furman hired Medved to be the head coach.

After a 9-21 record in his first season and an 11-22 record his second, Medved turned the program around. In his third season at Furman, he posted a 19-16 record, followed by a 23-11 record in his fourth and final year at Furman. In that 2016-17 season where Furman went 23-11 they would win th SoCon Conference regular season title and Niko Medved was named SoCon Conference’s coach of the year.

He would then spend one lone season as Drake’s head coach, going 17-17. Then he would get the opportunity to return to another place he once called home as an assistant.

Colorado State

From 2007-2013 Medved was an assistant on Colorado State’s staff. It was his last stent as an assistant before becoming the head coach of Furman.

In 2018 in took over the head coaching job at Colorado State and has done for them what he has done for every other program he touched. He turned them into winners.

His first season, the Rams went 12-20. Then in three years back to back to back Colorado State posted a 20 win season under Niko Medved. (20-12, 20-8, 25-6)

After finishing 25-6 Colorado State got the invite to the NCAA Tournament held every year in March to crown the champion. In his first game as a head coach in the tournament, the Rams would lose a close, hard fought game to Michigan.

The next season, which was last season, Colorado State took a step back finishing the season 15-18 with a 6-12 conference record.

This season they are off to an impressive start at 7-0, with huge wins over already over Creighton and Colorado.

Niko Medved as a head coach has a career record of 177-151, a winning percentage of 54%.
