Kim English, Coaching Spotlight, 11/16/2023.

Every Thursday during college basketball I like to show love to the coaches. Especially coaches working the ranks at small schools, doing big things.
The coach who has stood out to me over this past week is Kim English, head coach of Providence Friars Basketball.
After watching the game against Wisconsin, I was so impressed with how this team played, I had to look into the head coach. Kim English, then find out how he worked his way to becoming the head coach at Providence. The big shoes he stepped into and the passion he brings to the game.
Kim English, the Coach
After his playing years were over in the NBA, Kim English began his journey as a college basketball coach. Starting out with two years as an assistant at Tulsa, then two years as an assistant at Colorado. This guy works in patterns, then another two years as an assistant to Rick Barnes at Tennessee.
In 2021 he got his first head coaching job at George Mason, and you guessed it, coached there for two years. In his tenure at George Mason, coach English had an impressive record of 34-29. Including a 20-13 season in 2022-23.
Ed Cooley left Providence for Georgetown, and Kim English got the call to fill his shoes. We are only three games into his tenure, yet I am positive this man is the right man for the job.
The Passion Kim English Brings
It is normal to find one guy who plays with his heart on his sleeve, full of passion. Normal to find a guy or two who can knock down shots. Also, normal of course to find a defensive guy to lockdown somebody when you need it.
However it is a sign of special coaching when all five players on the floor are playing like this. The intensity, focus, and knowledge this team has played with so far this season is all coaching.
His energy and confidence rubs off of the players, and you can tell he has taught them well. Passing up good shots for great shots on offense. Putting 300% into defense and rebounding, taking pride in getting stops. Playing for each other and having the knowledge and awareness to rotate and help when needed.
Hats off to coach Kim English at Providence University.
