This is a huge loss for the Hawks. Seattle Seahawks edge rusher Uchenna Nwosu will undergo pectoral surgery and likely miss the remainder of the season, head coach Pete Carroll announced Monday.
Nwosu’s injury is a big blow to a Seattle defense that’s been solid through the season’s first seven weeks. The Seahawks place 12th in points allowed. Nwosu has racked up 16 tackles (four for loss), six QB hits, two sacks, and two forced fumbles in six games in 2023. He also ranks third on the team with 15 pressures, according to PFF.
Nwosu signed a three-year, $45-million contract extension with the Seahawks this past offseason. This was after recording a career-high 9.5 sacks in his first year with the Seahawks last season. He joined Seattle on a two-year deal during the 2022 offseason after spending his first four NFL seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. He was drafted in the second round in 201 by the Chargers.
Nwosu is not just one of the team’s best pass rushers, but he’s also one of the best run defenders. Boye Mafe, Derick Hall, and Darrell Taylor will all get bigger responsibilities with Nwosu out. Mafe is the team’s joint-leader with four sacks. Carroll didn’t say that the Seahawks will look to make a move for another OLB at the trade deadline, but we’re a week out. We know Seattle is always fishing around for options, so it will be interesting to see if they decide to add before the deadline.
