Michigan Basketball is off to a hot start in the 2024-25 season sitting at 8-2 thus far. The front court of Vladislav Goldin and Danny Wolf is cream of the crop, however the back court for one reason or another has let them down.
Head coach Dusty May could be the reason as he seems to be comfortable with Danny Wolf having the ball in late game situations as the point guard. This move I disagree with strongly.
Is it that he doesn’t have an elite guard that he trust, or has he out coached himself. Both losses this season came by two points, and both games were riddled with late game turnovers.
Last night against Arkansas we saw Danny Wolf running the point on the last possession. This play resulted in a horrible pass, nearly a turnover, and a heave of a shot at the buzzer that had no chance.
This team is at it’s best with Danny Wolf creating from the high post. It allows Goldin one on one on the low post, and shooters to spot up.
However Wolf has been asked to run the offense from half court, again for reasons I cannot understand.
Michigan Basketball Missing Key Guard to Make Deep Run
Dusty May saw success with Johnell Davis, now playing for Arkansas running the point. The offense at Florida Atlantic was fast pace, let Davis make decisions on the run. While the defense was able to shut down opponents.
In his first year at Michigan, May has the defense playing at a high level, yet the offense is more half court. Give the ball to Danny Wolf 40 feet from the basket and let an unathletic, slow, power forward illustrate the offense.
While some will argue Wolf has been amazing this season stats wise and Michigan’s best player. That argument I will agree with, the kid is special. I just cannot wrap my head around him running the point guard position.
Hopefully as the year progresses, adjustments are made. A guard steps up and gains May’s trust and runs the offense through Wolf and Goldin.
Unless Michigan’s guard play improves over the season, look for the Wolverines to fall short of their potential.
That potential is an elite 8 appearance, in which anything can happen from there. However with Danny Wolf running the point in late game situations, the round of 32 is probably their ceiling.
Their are over three months left in the season, more than enough time for May and Michigan to figure it out. As of right now, the front court is being asked to do too much!
