This is a scary sight for non Chiefs fans. Kansas City has signed defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to a contract extension, the team has announced

Spagnuolo has been with the Chiefs since 2019. He and his defense have improved year by year since he has joined the team.

The 49ers ranked first in EPA/play and success rate on offense in 2023. Under Spags, the  Chiefs’ defense was able to handle quarterback Brock Purdy most of the night while holding star running back Christian McCaffrey to 80 yards on 22 carries.

Spagnolo has been sensational since he joined the Chiefs. The way the defense played all season speaks volumes to how well his tenure as defensive coordinator has been going.

Kansas City’s defense was stellar all season long en route to a Super Bowl win. The defense  ranked second in points per game and fourth in defensive success rate.

The team also saw development and huge improvements from young players, including Trent McDuffie, L’Jarius Sneed, and Leo Chenal. George Karlaftis even took another step forward in year two, becoming a huge part of the defensive line led by Chris Jones.

Spagnuolo was hired by the Chiefs after taking a year off in 2018. He was defensive coordinator of  the New York Giants from 2015-2017. He even got some head coaching reps, as he spent time as the interim head coach in 2017 after the Giants fired Ben McAdoo.

The Chiefs have tough decisions to make on the defensive side of the ball this offseason, as crucial pieces are set to become unrestricted free agents in March. Some of these include Jones, Drue Tranquill, and Sneed.

This will be super tough. The Chiefs have already picked up the option for Chris Jones, but Sneed coming out saying “they don’t have enough money to pay me and (Chris) Jones” makes things a bit more difficult.

Spagnuolo became the first offensive or defensive coordinator in NFL history to win four Super Bowls with the victory on Sunday. He now has one with the Giants and three with the Chiefs.

With how the Chiefs have been looking, Spagnuolo may add some more hardware to his trophy case before it’s all said and done.
