The Chiefs will be losing some depth on the defensive line. Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Charles Omenihu suffered a torn ACL in the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens, sources told Jonathan Jones of CBS.
Omenihu sustained the injury in the second quarter while trying to chase down quarterback Lamar Jackson. He was forced to leave the game and shortly after it was announced he would not return.
Omenihu made one of the biggest plays of the game. This was when he strip-sacked Jackson early in the second quarter.
The young man was having the best year of his career after signing a two-year deal with the Chiefs in March. The former Texas Longhorn joined the Chiefs last offseason from the 49ers. Omenihu spent the previous two seasons in San Francisco, earning 4.5 sacks in 26 games with the Niners.
He had career highs in sacks (seven) and tackles (28) in 11 regular-season games. This was even after Omenihu was suspended for the first six games of the season for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
Kansas City’s defensive end depth chart includes George Karlaftis, Mike Danna, Felix Anudike-Uzomah, BJ Thompson, and Malik Herring. Karlaftis has been a stud these last few weeks, so it will be interesting to see who will step up besides him.
Steve Spagnuolo has been “in his bag” over the last few weeks of the season into the playoffs. Due to this, I look for him to be able to make it work, even with the loss of Omenihu.
